Peter Walking on Water: Stepping Out in Faith
Scripture:
“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’”
— Matthew 14:30-31 (NIV)
Message:
The story of Peter walking on water is a profound illustration of stepping out in faith and trusting in the power of Jesus. It shows that when we fix our eyes on Jesus, nothing is impossible, but when we allow fear and doubt to creep in, we begin to falter.
The disciples were in a boat, battling a storm when they saw Jesus walking on the water toward them. In a bold act of faith, Peter asked Jesus to call him out onto the water. Jesus agreed, and Peter, full of faith, stepped out of the boat and began walking on the water toward Jesus. For a moment, Peter did the impossible — he walked on water because his eyes were fixed on Jesus.
However, when Peter noticed the strong wind and the waves, fear gripped his heart. His focus shifted from Jesus to the circumstances around him, and immediately, he began to sink. In desperation, Peter cried out to Jesus, “Lord, save me!” Jesus, full of compassion, immediately reached out and caught him.
This story teaches us that stepping out in faith is not the absence of fear but the decision to trust Jesus in the midst of it. Peter didn’t sink because the storm was too powerful; he sank because he took his eyes off the One who had called him. In life, we often face “storms” — challenges, uncertainties, and fears. But when we keep our focus on Jesus, His power sustains us, and we can do the impossible.
When we begin to doubt or struggle in our faith, like Peter, we can cry out, “Lord, save me!” And just as Jesus immediately reached out to Peter, He is always ready to save us, to pull us out of our sinking moments, and restore our faith. His saving power is constant, and His grace never fails.
The lesson is simple: when you step out in faith, keep your eyes on Jesus. Don’t let fear distract you or cause you to doubt His ability to sustain you. No matter how strong the wind or how high the waves, Jesus is greater than any storm, and He will always be there to lift you up.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You when I step out in faith. Strengthen me to trust You even in the storms of life. When doubt and fear arise, remind me of Your saving power and Your constant presence. Thank You for always being there to lift me when I fall. In Your name, Amen.
